Can you please introduce yourself as the organizer of Enigma 2024?
As the co-chairperson of ENIGMA ’24, representing MoraMaths, the Mathematics Society of the University of Moratuwa, it gives me immense pleasure to extend a warm welcome to all of you. My name is Janeesha Wickramasinghe, and I am thrilled to be part of this exhilarating journey alongside the vibrant community of the University of Moratuwa.
I am a second-year undergraduate student majoring in Computer Science and Engineering, deeply passionate about the intersection of mathematics and programming. My journey with MoraMaths began in my freshman year when I was intrigued by the society’s commitment to fostering an appreciation for mathematics among students. It has since been a transformative experience, providing me with numerous opportunities to explore my interests, expand my knowledge, connect with like-minded individuals, and presently, the opportunity to organize this exciting event–ENIGMA ‘24.
Together with my fellow co-chairs and an outstanding organizing committee, we have been able to successfully launch ENIGMA ’24, a dynamic intra-university coding competition organized by MoraMaths, comprising a six-week workshop series focusing on Python Programming and Mathematics, followed by a hackathon consisting of two rounds.
I’m happy to share that we have successfully concluded the six-week workshop series, with a large number of enthusiastic and dedicated participants all throughout. Currently, we are gearing up for the first round of the hackathon, scheduled for the upcoming Saturday, March 16th, 2024, marking the beginning of another exciting phase of ENIGMA ’24.
What’s the idea behind this Competition?
ENIGMA’24 is more than just a coding competition; it’s an immersive experience meticulously crafted to ignite the passion for mathematics and programming in young minds. Our vision is to provide a dynamic platform where participants can hone their problem-solving skills, deepen their understanding of mathematics and programming, and foster a culture of innovation and collaboration within the university community, while also providing them with valuable real-world insights.
Through workshops, insightful sessions, and a challenging hackathon, we aim to empower participants to broaden their horizons, enhance their problem-solving prowess, and unlock their full potential.
Could you describe the theme on which this Competition is based?
The theme of ENIGMA ’24 revolves around the fusion of mathematics and programming, with emphasis on the events from the World War II era, where the renowned mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing invented a machine to crack the Enigma machine, which was employed by Nazi Germany to encrypt top-secret messages.
Drawing inspiration from the work of Alan Turing, ENIGMA ‘24 encourages participants to unravel complex problems, decipher intricate codes, and unleash their creativity to craft innovative solutions. Throughout the competition, participants will encounter challenges that require a blend of analytical thinking, mathematical intuition, and programming acumen. From unraveling algorithms to optimizing solutions, each task is designed to push their boundaries and foster intellectual growth.
What makes this event stand out from the rest?
ENIGMA ’24 stands out from other hackathons due to its comprehensive approach towards skill development and inclusive nature. Unlike conventional coding competitions, we don’t just focus on coding proficiency; we emphasize nurturing a holistic skill-set encompassing mathematics, programming, and problem-solving.
The six-week workshop series serves as a foundation, equipping participants with essential programming skills and mathematical concepts. Additionally, the insightful sessions by industry experts provide invaluable real-world perspectives, bridging the gap between academia and industry. Furthermore, the two-round hackathon offers a multifaceted challenge, providing participants an opportunity to put acquired knowledge and skills into practice, and encouraging teamwork between them.
